For dry flies, maintain at least 24 inches between the fly and the casting bubble. For wet flies, you can adjust the distance to match the depth of the fish.

Finding Fishing Success with the Universal Flycasting Rig

For your casting reel, use a reel that has a retrieve ratio of five spool winds to one crank turn, or 5:1.
Another important consideration to remember with the Universal Flycasting Rig is the line and the leader. The line should have a small diameter with no memory. For the leader, you want to have a tapered leader. The reason for this is that tapered leaders are more adept at keeping tangles from becoming a problem. If you have ever had to untangle a leader - you'll know one that does not tangle -- is worth its weight in gold. A good leader to use is a tapered, seven-and-a-half foot, six pound test.
